We're finally getting frost at night. (This prairie girl is happy with the "subtropical highland" climate of Frederick.) I covered the tomatoes and lettuce before going to bed on Nov. 1, then harvested all the tomatoes yesterday after we returned from our outing. It was cathartic, tugging at the vines and grabbing handfuls of fruit, green or red. Not the gentle nudging-aside of stems to gingerly pluck only the most perfectly ripened tomatoes, as I've done since June.
Most of the harvest is green cherry tomatoes. We'll probably let the bigboy-size tomatoes ripen before eating. I think we're going to make salsa verde and can it, but I'm open to suggestions if you have any. We have at least a half bushel.
This was our first major gardening attempt and we look forward to applying the things we learned from this experiment to next year's effort. We will not repeat okra (even though the flowers are lovely) or corn. We may not reattempt melons. We had great luck with sugar-snap peas, beans, tomatoes, carrots, and lettuce. Moderate success with bell peppers and cucumbers.
