Here's our photo from last night, snapped by our neighbor:
spider, fairy, cat trying to wink, and WordGirl.
Costumes were homemade, except for Roo's tutu, wings, and wand, which were birthday gifts from my parents for her dress-up bin. My ensemble came from the thrift store. When life throws you a pair of salmon-colored pants, you pretty much have to be WordGirl for Halloween. The cape is two valances, whipstitched together. The belt is a length of suedey holiday ribbon with a gold-foil covered juice concentrate lid "buckle" pinned and duct-taped together. For Shmoo, I made stuffed ears to attach to a standard stocking cap we had sitting around (see it better here). Shmoo's tail and HPR's additional four arms are the legs from old pairs black tights, stuffed with fill. HPR also had glowstick bracelets at the end of each arm. (HPR did his own costume.)
HPR had to work during Halloween day. I took the costume-clad kids to a church-sponsored party (hayride! bounce house! games! balloons!) at the park behind our house after Roo's nap. When HPR got home, he and I changed into our costumes. He took the kids trick-or-treating in the neighborhood while I staffed our door. Then we went to some friends' house for pumpkin chili and more kid mayhem. A great day overall.
I hum this song throughout every All Saints Day.
