I thought I had another year of the spiral perm era, but this kid anchors the photo in the particular few months that I rented a room in his family's house. (I lived in a LOT of places in Minneapolis/St. Paul in the '90s.) S's parents wanted him to get a hair cut, so I offered. They suggested the can of mandarin oranges to distract him.
